Cleveland Sinfonietta is a classical music ensemble based in Cleveland, Ohio. The ensemble was founded in 2007 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to bring high-quality classical music to the Cleveland community. The founding members of Cleveland Sinfonietta were violinist Jinjoo Cho, cellist Bryan Dumm, and pianist Hyun Soo Kim. They were later joined by violist Yu Jin and clarinetist Franklin Cohen. The ensemble has since expanded to include a rotating roster of talented musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra and other professional orchestras in the region. Cleveland Sinfonietta has become known for its innovative programming and commitment to showcasing the works of contemporary composers alongside the classics of the chamber music repertoire. The ensemble has performed at a variety of venues throughout Cleveland, including Severance Hall, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. One of the highlights of Cleveland Sinfonietta's early years was its performance of Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time" in 2008. The piece, which was composed while Messiaen was a prisoner of war during World War II, is a haunting meditation on the end of the world. Cleveland Sinfonietta's performance was praised for its sensitivity and emotional depth. In 2010, Cleveland Sinfonietta was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support its performance of John Adams' "Shaker Loops." The piece, which was inspired by the ecstatic movements of the Shakers, is a virtuosic showcase for string players. Cleveland Sinfonietta's performance was hailed as "exhilarating" and "viscerally exciting." In 2012, Cleveland Sinfonietta collaborated with the Cleveland Museum of Art to present a series of concerts inspired by the museum's collection of Asian art. The concerts featured works by composers from China, Japan, and Korea, as well as Western composers who were influenced by Asian music. The series was a critical and popular success, and it helped to establish Cleveland Sinfonietta as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking classical music ensembles in the region. In recent years, Cleveland Sinfonietta has continued to push the boundaries of classical music performance. In 2018, the ensemble collaborated with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to present a concert inspired by the museum's collection of dinosaur fossils. The concert featured works by composers who were inspired by the natural world, as well as a new piece by Cleveland-based composer Margaret Brouwer. Cleveland Sinfonietta has also been active in the community, performing at schools and community centers throughout the Cleveland area. The ensemble has a strong commitment to music education, and it has worked to inspire the next generation of classical music lovers through its performances and outreach programs. Overall, Cleveland Sinfonietta has established itself as one of the most exciting and innovative classical music ensembles in the Midwest. With its commitment to contemporary music and its dedication to community outreach, the ensemble is poised to continue making a significant impact on the Cleveland music scene for years to come.
