Artist Info

Gambe di Legno is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music on period instruments. The ensemble was founded in 2005 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The founding members of Gambe di Legno were all accomplished musicians with extensive experience in early music performance. They included Marco Beasley, a tenor and lutenist who had performed with many of the leading early music ensembles in Europe; Guido Morini, a harpsichordist and organist who had worked with the likes of Jordi Savall and Giovanni Sollima; and Maurizio Cagnoli, a viola da gamba player who had played with the Ensemble Clément Janequin and the Huelgas Ensemble. From the beginning, Gambe di Legno was committed to performing early music in a historically informed manner, using period instruments and techniques to recreate the sound and style of the music as it would have been heard in its original context. The ensemble's repertoire included works by composers such as Monteverdi, Dowland, and Purcell, as well as lesser-known composers from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. One of the highlights of Gambe di Legno's early career was their performance at the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, one of the most prestigious early music festivals in the world. The ensemble's performance was widely praised for its virtuosity and sensitivity to the nuances of the music. In the years that followed, Gambe di Legno continued to build a reputation as one of the leading early music ensembles in Europe. They performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout the continent, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. One of the ensemble's most acclaimed performances was their rendition of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, which they performed at the Salzburg Festival in 2010. The performance was hailed as a triumph of historical authenticity and musical excellence, and it cemented Gambe di Legno's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of early music. Over the years, the membership of Gambe di Legno has evolved, with new musicians joining the ensemble and others moving on to pursue other projects. However, the core commitment to historical authenticity and musical excellence has remained constant, and the ensemble continues to be recognized as one of the leading interpreters of early music in the world. In recognition of their contributions to the field of early music, Gambe di Legno has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. These include the Diapason d'Or, one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music world, which the ensemble received for their recording of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610. Despite their many accomplishments, the members of Gambe di Legno remain committed to exploring new avenues of expression and pushing the boundaries of early music performance. They continue to perform and record together, and their music continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
