Donald Armstrong is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on 22nd September 1955 in Auckland, New Zealand. From a young age, Armstrong showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly showed remarkable talent. Armstrong's musical education began at the University of Auckland, where he studied under the tutelage of Professor Leonard Dommett. He later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Scholarship. During his time in London, Armstrong had the opportunity to study with some of the world's most renowned violinists, including Yehudi Menuhin and Itzhak Perlman. After completing his studies, Armstrong returned to New Zealand and began his professional career as a violinist. He quickly established himself as one of the country's leading musicians and was appointed as the concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 1989. Armstrong held this position for over a decade and played a significant role in shaping the orchestra's sound and reputation. Throughout his career, Armstrong has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Neville Marriner, and Edo de Waart. One of Armstrong's most significant achievements was his role in the establishment of the New Zealand String Quartet. In 1987, he co-founded the quartet with three other musicians, and they quickly gained a reputation as one of the world's leading string quartets. The quartet has performed extensively throughout New Zealand and internationally, and has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. In addition to his work as a performer, Armstrong is also a highly respected music educator. He has taught at the University of Auckland, the New Zealand School of Music, and the Australian National Academy of Music. He is also a regular guest lecturer and has given masterclasses throughout the world. Throughout his career, Armstrong has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 2002, he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to music, and in 2010, he was awarded the prestigious KBB Music Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also been awarded the Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Award, the New Zealand Music Award, and the Creative New Zealand Michael King Fellowship. Armstrong continues to perform and teach, and his passion for music remains as strong as ever. He is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's most accomplished musicians and has made a significant contribution to the country's cultural landscape.
