Born on May 23, 1919, in Saint Joseph, Missouri, Betty was the daughter of a traveling salesman and a homemaker. She grew up in Seattle, Washington, where she developed a love for music and dance at an early age. Betty's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in the arts. She began taking dance lessons when she was just six years old and soon became a skilled tap dancer. She also took voice lessons and started performing in local theater productions. In 1936, Betty moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California. While there, she continued to study dance and music and performed in several campus productions. She also began auditioning for roles in Hollywood films. Betty's big break came in 1942 when she was cast in the Broadway musical "Of Thee I Sing." The show was a huge success and earned Betty rave reviews for her performance. She went on to star in several other Broadway productions, including "Jackpot" and "Call Me Mister." In 1947, Betty made her film debut in the musical comedy "On the Town." The film was a hit and helped to establish Betty as a talented actress and singer. She went on to appear in several other films, including "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and "My Sister Eileen." Throughout her career, Betty remained committed to classical music and continued to perform in concerts and recitals. She was known for her beautiful soprano voice and her ability to bring emotion and depth to her performances. One of Betty's most memorable performances came in 1958 when she starred in the Broadway production of "Damn Yankees." The show was a huge success and earned Betty a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. She also won a Theatre World Award for her performance. In addition to her work in theater and film, Betty was also a television star. She appeared in several popular TV shows, including "All in the Family," "Laverne & Shirley," and "The Love Boat." She also hosted her own talk show, "Betty Garrett and Other Songs," which aired on NBC in the 1970s.
