From a young age, Wimmer showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Wimmer began his musical training at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. By the age of ten, he had already won several local competitions and was considered a prodigy. In his teenage years, Wimmer began to explore other instruments, including the violin and cello. He also started composing his own music, which he would often perform at local concerts. His talent and dedication to music caught the attention of several prominent musicians, who encouraged him to pursue a career in music. After completing his high school education, Wimmer enrolled at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he studied music composition and performance. He graduated with honors and went on to pursue a master's degree in music at the same institution. Wimmer's career as a professional musician began in the early 1970s, when he joined the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra as a cellist. He quickly established himself as one of the most talented cellists in the orchestra and was soon promoted to the position of principal cellist. During his time with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Wimmer performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors of his time, including Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado. In addition to his work with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Wimmer also pursued a successful solo career. He released several albums of his own compositions, which were well-received by both critics and audiences. He also performed as a soloist with several other orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Wimmer's talent and dedication to music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin for his contributions to the city's cultural life. He was also awarded the German Music Prize in 1992 and the European Cultural Prize in 1998. Despite his success, Wimmer remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and compose music until his death in 2010 at the age of 60.
