The ensemble is based in New York City and is made up of four main members: violinist Sarah Kim, violist Jocelin Pan, cellist Laura Metcalf, and pianist Andrea Lam. Sarah Kim, the founder of Charis Ensemble, is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles around the world. Jocelin Pan is also a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Laura Metcalf is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and has performed with the New York City Ballet Orchestra and the New York Pops. Andrea Lam is a graduate of the Yale School of Music and has performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble's name, Charis, is derived from the Greek word for grace, which reflects the group's commitment to performing with elegance and beauty. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary composers such as Philip Glass and John Adams. One of the highlights of Charis Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2016 Chamber Music America Conference in New York City. The ensemble was selected to perform as part of the conference's showcase concert, which featured some of the most talented chamber music ensembles in the country. Charis Ensemble's performance was well-received by the audience and critics alike, and helped to establish the group as one of the rising stars of the chamber music scene.
