Pro Musica Prague is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1988 in the Czech Republic. The ensemble is known for its exceptional performances of classical music, particularly the works of Czech composers. The ensemble has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world and has won numerous awards for its outstanding performances. The founding members of Pro Musica Prague were a group of young musicians who were passionate about classical music and wanted to create an ensemble that would showcase the best of Czech classical music. The ensemble was founded by violinist Jiri Tomasek, who is still a member of the ensemble today. Other founding members included cellist Jan Pospichal, violist Jiri Kabat, and pianist Jiri Skovajsa. From the beginning, Pro Musica Prague was committed to performing the works of Czech composers, particularly Antonin Dvorak and Bedrich Smetana. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performances of these composers' works, and soon began to attract attention from audiences and critics alike. One of the highlights of Pro Musica Prague's early career was its performance at the Prague Spring International Music Festival in 1990. The ensemble performed Dvorak's String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96, also known as the "American" quartet. The performance was a huge success, and the ensemble received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the years, Pro Musica Prague has continued to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. The ensemble has also performed at numerous music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. One of the most memorable performances in Pro Musica Prague's history was its performance of Smetana's String Quartet No. 1 in E minor, "From My Life," at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1998. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and the ensemble received a standing ovation from the audience. Pro Musica Prague has also won numerous awards for its outstanding performances. In 1992, the ensemble won the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Dvorak's String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96. The ensemble has also won the Czech Music Critics' Award several times, most recently in 2019 for its recording of Smetana's String Quartet No. 1 in E minor, "From My Life." Today, Pro Musica Prague is still going strong, with Jiri Tomasek still leading the ensemble as its artistic director and first violinist. The ensemble continues to perform the works of Czech composers, as well as other classical music repertoire. Pro Musica Prague is widely regarded as one of the finest classical music ensembles in the world, and its performances continue to captivate audiences around the globe.
