Matmos is an experimental electronic music duo consisting of Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt. The duo was formed in San Francisco, California in 1995 and has since become known for their unique sound and unconventional approach to music-making. Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt met while studying at the California Institute of the Arts in the early 1990s. They bonded over their shared love of experimental music and began collaborating on various projects. In 1995, they formed Matmos and released their first album, "Matmos," the following year. Matmos quickly gained a reputation for their innovative approach to music-making. They incorporated a wide range of sounds and samples into their music, including field recordings, found objects, and even the sounds of surgical procedures. Their music was often described as "experimental" or "avant-garde," and they were praised for their ability to push the boundaries of electronic music. Over the years, Matmos has released a number of critically acclaimed albums, including "The West," "A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure," and "The Marriage of True Minds." They have also collaborated with a number of other artists, including Björk, who featured Matmos on her album "Vespertine." One of Matmos' most notable performances was their 2001 concert at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. For the performance, the duo set up a laboratory on stage and performed a live experiment using a cow's uterus as a musical instrument. The performance was controversial and garnered national attention, but it also solidified Matmos' reputation as one of the most innovative and daring acts in electronic music. In addition to their music, Matmos has also been recognized for their contributions to the world of sound design. They have created soundscapes for a number of films and television shows, including "The Cremaster Cycle" and "The Wire." Matmos has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2001, they were awarded the Prix Ars Electronica for their album "A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure." They were also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003 for their work on Björk's album "Vespertine." Despite their success, Matmos has remained committed to their experimental approach to music-making. They continue to push the boundaries of electronic music and explore new sounds and techniques in their work. Their music remains as innovative and challenging as ever, and they continue to inspire and influence a new generation of electronic musicians.
