The Oulu Chamber Choir is a Finnish classical music ensemble that has gained international recognition for its exceptional performances. The choir was founded in 1988 by its current conductor, Professor Kari Ala-Pöllänen, and has since become one of the most respected choral groups in Finland. The choir's early years were marked by a strong commitment to the performance of contemporary Finnish music. This focus on new music helped to establish the choir's reputation as an innovative and forward-thinking ensemble. In 1991, the choir won the prestigious Tampere Vocal Music Festival, which helped to bring them to the attention of a wider audience. Over the years, the Oulu Chamber Choir has performed extensively throughout Finland and abroad, including in Germany, France, Italy, and the United States. The choir has also collaborated with many renowned conductors and composers, including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kaija Saariaho, and Magnus Lindberg. One of the choir's most notable performances was at the 2000 World Choral Symposium in Finland, where they performed a program of contemporary Finnish music to great acclaim. The choir has also performed at many other major festivals and events, including the Helsinki Festival, the Tampere Biennale, and the Turku Music Festival. In addition to their live performances, the Oulu Chamber Choir has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. Their 2003 album, "Northern Lights," which featured works by Finnish composers such as Einojuhani Rautavaara and Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, was particularly well-received. The choir has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Finnish State Prize for Music in 2003. They have also been recognized for their contributions to Finnish culture and music, receiving the Pro Finlandia medal in 2013. Despite their many achievements, the Oulu Chamber Choir remains committed to their mission of promoting contemporary Finnish music and expanding the choral repertoire. They continue to perform and record new works by Finnish composers, and their dedication to their craft has earned them a well-deserved place among the world's finest choral ensembles.
