The founding members of I Solisti Ambrosiani were a group of young musicians who were passionate about early music and the Baroque period. They were inspired by the music of composers such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi, and sought to bring this music to a wider audience. The ensemble was named after Saint Ambrose, the patron saint of Milan, and the group quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances. The main members of I Solisti Ambrosiani have changed over the years, but the ensemble has always been led by a strong artistic director. The first artistic director of the ensemble was the violinist and conductor Piero Toso, who led the group for over 20 years. Toso was known for his innovative interpretations of Baroque music, and his leadership helped to establish I Solisti Ambrosiani as one of the leading early music ensembles in Italy. The ensemble's performances were praised for their technical precision and musicality, and they quickly gained a following among classical music enthusiasts. In 1976, the ensemble won the prestigious Prix Italia for their recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, cementing their reputation as one of the top early music ensembles in the world. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, I Solisti Ambrosiani continued to perform and record extensively, releasing numerous albums of Baroque and early music. The ensemble also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the soprano Emma Kirkby and the English Chamber Orchestra. In 1992, the ensemble was invited to perform at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, an honor that was a testament to their reputation as one of the top classical music ensembles in the world. In recent years, I Solisti Ambrosiani has continued to perform and record, with a focus on expanding their repertoire to include music from other periods and genres. The ensemble has also worked to promote classical music education, offering workshops and masterclasses for young musicians.
