The University of Houston Percussion Ensemble is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its unique sound and exceptional performances for over four decades. Founded in 1976 by Dr. Blake Wilkins, the ensemble has become one of the most respected percussion groups in the world, known for its innovative programming and virtuosic musicianship. The ensemble is made up of undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Houston's Moores School of Music, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The group typically consists of 12-15 members, who play a wide range of percussion instruments, including marimbas, vibraphones, xylophones, drums, and cymbals. Under the direction of Dr. Blake Wilkins, the ensemble has performed at numerous prestigious venues and events, including the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. The group has also collaborated with renowned composers and performers, such as Steve Reich, John Cage, and Evelyn Glennie. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was at the 1992 Percussive Arts Society International Convention, where they premiered Steve Reich's "Mallet Quartet." The piece, which was written specifically for the ensemble, received critical acclaim and has since become a staple of the percussion repertoire. In addition to their performances, the University of Houston Percussion Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 1991, the group won the prestigious PAS International Percussion Ensemble Competition, solidifying their reputation as one of the top percussion ensembles in the world. They have also been featured on several recordings, including "The University of Houston Percussion Ensemble Plays John Cage" and "The University of Houston Percussion Ensemble Plays Steve Reich." Over the years, the ensemble has undergone several changes in leadership and membership, but their commitment to excellence and innovation has remained constant. Today, under the direction of Dr. Blake Wilkins and Dr. Matthew Strauss, the University of Houston Percussion Ensemble continues to push the boundaries of percussion music and inspire audiences around the world.
