The Kiev Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 in Kiev, Ukraine. The orchestra has become one of the most renowned orchestras in Eastern Europe, and has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world. The founding of the Kiev Symphony Orchestra was the result of the vision of Dr. Wes Janzen, a Canadian conductor and composer who had been living in Ukraine for several years. Some of the main members of the orchestra have included Oleksandr Bozhyk, a renowned violinist who has performed with the orchestra since its founding, and Oleksandr Sirenko, a conductor who has been the artistic director of the orchestra since 1996. The Kiev Symphony Orchestra has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The orchestra has also performed at many international music festivals, including the Prague Spring Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. One of the highlights of the Kiev Symphony Orchestra's career was its performance at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. The orchestra was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the games, and its performance was seen by millions of people around the world. The Kiev Symphony Orchestra has also received many awards and accolades over the years. In 1998, the orchestra was awarded the title of "Honored Ensemble of Ukraine" by the Ukrainian government, in recognition of its contributions to the country's cultural heritage.
