Natasha Atlas is a British-Egyptian singer and songwriter who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born on March 20, 1964, in Brussels, Belgium, Atlas grew up in a multicultural family with an Egyptian father and a British mother. Her father was a musician and a scholar of Arabic music, which had a profound influence on Atlas's musical upbringing. Atlas began her musical career in the early 1980s as a member of the band Transglobal Underground, which blended traditional Middle Eastern and North African music with electronic dance beats. The band gained a following in the UK and Europe and released several albums, including "Dream of 100 Nations" and "International Times." In 1993, Atlas left Transglobal Underground to pursue a solo career. Her debut album, "Diaspora," was released in 1995 and featured a mix of Arabic, North African, and Western musical styles. The album was well-received by critics and helped establish Atlas as a rising star in the world music scene. Over the next few years, Atlas continued to release albums that blended traditional Arabic music with contemporary Western styles. Her 1997 album, "Halim," was a tribute to the legendary Egyptian singer Abdel Halim Hafez and featured Atlas's interpretations of some of his most famous songs. The album was a critical and commercial success and helped Atlas gain a wider audience. In 2000, Atlas released "Ayeshteni," which featured collaborations with musicians from around the world, including the Indian tabla player Talvin Singh and the Spanish flamenco guitarist Juan Martin. The album was a departure from Atlas's earlier work and showcased her versatility as a musician. In 2001, Atlas collaborated with the Belgian composer and producer Marc Moulin on the album "Foretold in the Language of Dreams." The album featured Atlas's vocals set to Moulin's jazz-infused electronic music and was a departure from Atlas's earlier work. In 2003, Atlas released "Something Dangerous," which featured collaborations with the British producer and musician Martin Russell. The album was a departure from Atlas's earlier work and featured a more electronic sound. In addition to her solo work, Atlas has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Peter Gabriel, Jah Wobble, and Nigel Kennedy. She has also performed at major music festivals around the world, including Glastonbury, WOMAD, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Atlas's contributions to the world of music have not gone unnoticed. She has been nominated for several awards, including the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award and the Mercury Prize. In 2006, she was awarded the WOMEX Award for her contributions to world music. In recent years, Atlas has continued to push the boundaries of classical music. In 2015, she released "Myriad Road," which featured collaborations with musicians from around the world, including the Moroccan oud player Mehdi Nassouli and the Turkish clarinet player Hüsnü Şenlendirici. The album was a critical and commercial success and showcased Atlas's continued commitment to exploring new musical styles and traditions. Today, Natasha Atlas is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential musicians in the world of classical music. Her unique blend of traditional Arabic music and contemporary Western styles has inspired countless musicians and helped to bridge cultural divides.
