Duo Noire
Artist Info
Duo Noire is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2008 by guitarists Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett. The duo is known for their innovative and dynamic performances that blend classical, contemporary, and world music styles. Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett met while studying at the Yale School of Music. They quickly discovered a shared passion for exploring the possibilities of the guitar as a versatile and expressive instrument. They formed Duo Noire with the goal of pushing the boundaries of classical guitar music and creating new works that would showcase the instrument's full range of capabilities. Since their founding, Duo Noire has become one of the most acclaimed guitar ensembles in the world. They have performed at major venues and festivals across the United States and Europe, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They have also collaborated with some of the most respected composers and musicians in the contemporary classical music scene. One of Duo Noire's most notable achievements was the release of their debut album, "Night Triptych," in 2016. The album features original compositions by some of the most exciting young composers working today, including Andy Akiho, Elliott Sharp, and Frederic Hand. The album received widespread critical acclaim and was named one of the best classical albums of the year by NPR. Duo Noire has also been recognized for their innovative and boundary-pushing performances. In 2017, they were awarded the prestigious Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program Grant, which allowed them to commission new works from three composers: Mary Kouyoumdjian, Gabriella Smith, and Eve Beglarian. The resulting pieces were premiered by Duo Noire in a series of concerts across the United States. In addition to their work as a duo, Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett are both accomplished solo performers and educators. Flippin is a faculty member at the State University of New York at Fredonia, where he teaches guitar and music theory. Mallett is a faculty member at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he teaches guitar and chamber music. Despite their many achievements, Duo Noire remains committed to their original mission of exploring the possibilities of the guitar as a versatile and expressive instrument. They continue to push the boundaries of classical guitar music and collaborate with some of the most exciting composers and musicians working today. Their innovative and dynamic performances have earned them a devoted following and cemented their place as one of the most important ensembles in contemporary classical music.More....
