Peter Lang was born on August 1, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up in a musical family, with his father playing the guitar and his mother playing the piano. Lang started playing the guitar at the age of 14 and quickly became passionate about music. Lang's early influences were blues and folk music, and he started performing in coffeehouses and clubs in the Minneapolis area. He also started writing his own songs and recording them on a reel-to-reel tape recorder. In 1972, Lang released his first album, "The Thing at the Nursery Room Window," which was a mix of blues, folk, and jazz. The album received critical acclaim and helped establish Lang as a rising star in the music world. Over the next few years, Lang continued to release albums and tour extensively, both as a solo artist and with other musicians. He collaborated with artists such as Leo Kottke, John Fahey, and Ry Cooder, and his music continued to evolve, incorporating elements of classical, jazz, and world music. In 1976, Lang released his most successful album, "The American Stranger," which featured a mix of original compositions and covers of traditional folk songs. The album received widespread critical acclaim and helped establish Lang as one of the leading guitarists of his generation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Lang continued to release albums and tour extensively, both in the United States and internationally. He also started teaching guitar and became a respected educator, sharing his knowledge and expertise with a new generation of musicians. In 2000, Lang was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts, which is the highest honor given to traditional and folk artists in the United States. The award recognized Lang's contributions to the preservation and promotion of traditional American music. Lang continued to perform and record music until his death on July 14, 2010, at the age of 60. He left behind a legacy as one of the most innovative and influential guitarists of his generation, and his music continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
