Born on June 12, 1950, in Berlin, Germany, Mahn showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Mahn's musical education began at the Berlin Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a scholarship to study under the guidance of the legendary pianist, Vladimir Horowitz. Mahn's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills as a pianist. He won several prestigious awards, including the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Mahn's career as a concert pianist took off in the 1970s, and he quickly became known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to interpret complex musical compositions. He performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Mahn's most memorable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, which he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1985. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Mahn received a standing ovation from the audience. Mahn's repertoire was vast, and he was known for his ability to perform a wide range of musical styles, from classical to contemporary. He was particularly fond of the works of Chopin, and his performances of Chopin's music were considered some of the best in the world.
