The South Bend Chamber Singers is a classical music ensemble based in South Bend, Indiana. The group was founded in 1988 by Nancy Menk, a professor of music at Saint Mary's College, and a group of local singers who shared a passion for choral music. From its inception, the South Bend Chamber Singers has been dedicated to performing a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. The group's repertoire includes works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and Britten, as well as lesser-known composers and contemporary composers. The ensemble's main members are a group of highly skilled and experienced singers, many of whom have been with the group for many years. The group's current members include sopranos Nancy Menk, Karen Schneider-Kirner, and Sarah Schmidt; altos Karen Buranskas, Mary Anne Byrne, and Mary Ellen Schauber; tenors David Eicher, David Heinze, and David Sinden; and basses David Brock, David Govertsen, and Michael Wartell. Over the years, the South Bend Chamber Singers has performed at a wide range of venues and events, including concerts, festivals, and special events. Some of the group's most notable performances include a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the Millennium Stage series; a performance at the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Conference; and a concert at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The South Bend Chamber Singers has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. The group has been named the "Best Classical Vocal Ensemble" by the South Bend Tribune's Readers' Choice Awards multiple times, and has received critical acclaim for its recordings, including its 2015 album "Christmas at Loretto" and its 2017 album "American Reflections." In addition to its performances and recordings, the South Bend Chamber Singers is also committed to music education and outreach. The group regularly hosts workshops and masterclasses for local students and singers, and has collaborated with local schools and community organizations to bring choral music to a wider audience.
