His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Day showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He studied under some of the best flute teachers in the country, including Julius Baker and Samuel Baron. One of the highlights of Day's career came in 1990 when he was invited to perform at the prestigious Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont.
