The group was founded in 1979 by John Alexander, a distinguished conductor and choral music educator. John Alexander was born in 1941 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a musical family and began singing in choirs at a young age. He attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in choral conducting. He later earned a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the University of Illinois. After completing his studies, Alexander began his career as a choral conductor. He served as the director of choral activities at California State University, Northridge, and later at California State University, Fullerton. He also served as the conductor of the Pacific Chorale, a professional choir based in Orange County, California. In 1979, Alexander founded the John Alexander Singers, a professional choir made up of some of the finest singers in Southern California. The group quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and dynamic performances. They became known for their ability to perform a wide range of repertoire, from Renaissance choral music to contemporary works. Over the years, the John Alexander Singers have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. They have also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of the John Alexander Singers' career was their performance at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. They were chosen to perform the national anthem at the opening ceremony, which was watched by millions of people around the world. The group's performance was widely praised for its beauty and precision. The John Alexander Singers have also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1999, they were awarded the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence by Chorus America, a national organization that supports and promotes choral music. They have also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for their recordings, including their album "American Voices," which features works by American composers. In addition to their performances and recordings, the John Alexander Singers are also committed to music education. They regularly work with young singers and conductors, offering workshops and masterclasses to help develop the next generation of choral musicians. John Alexander retired as the conductor of the John Alexander Singers in 2018, after nearly 40 years of leading the ensemble. He was succeeded by Brian Dehn, a talented conductor and singer who had previously served as the group's assistant conductor. Under Dehn's leadership, the John Alexander Singers continue to thrive and push the boundaries of choral music. They remain committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and power of classical music to audiences around the world.More....
