Role:PerformerPéter Kertész was a Hungarian conductor and music director who was born on August 22, 1930, in Budapest, Hungary. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist. Kertész began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin. However, he soon discovered his passion for conducting and decided to pursue it as a career. Kertész studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he was mentored by some of the most prominent conductors of the time. He graduated in 1953 and began his career as a conductor in Hungary. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional talent and was soon invited to conduct orchestras in other countries. In 1956, Kertész was appointed as the music director of the Hungarian State Opera, a position he held until 1960. During his tenure, he conducted numerous productions and gained critical acclaim for his work. He also conducted the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Budapest Symphony Orchestra during this time. In 1960, Kertész left Hungary and moved to Germany, where he became the music director of the Augsburg Opera. He also conducted the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra during this time. In 1965, he was appointed as the music director of the Cologne Opera, a position he held until 1973. During his time in Cologne, Kertész conducted numerous productions and gained international recognition for his work. In 1973, Kertész moved to London, where he became the principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He held this position until 1979 and conducted numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra. He also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra during this time. In 1983, Kertész was appointed as the music director of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, a position he held until 1990. During his tenure, he conducted numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra and gained critical acclaim for his work. He also conducted the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra during this time. Kertész was known for his exceptional talent as a conductor and his ability to bring out the best in the orchestras he worked with. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was also known for his commitment to contemporary music and conducted numerous premieres of new works. Kertész received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1973, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to music. In 1983, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. He was also awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit in 1990. Kertész passed away on April 14, 1988, in London, England, at the age of 57.
