Born in Sydney, Australia, on 22nd August 1955, Julie Adam showed an early interest in music. She began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon recognized as a prodigious talent. Her parents, who were both music teachers, recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Julie Adam's early education was at the Conservatorium High School in Sydney, where she studied under the guidance of Alexander Sverjensky. She then went on to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she was awarded the prestigious John Allison Scholarship. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours and was awarded the University Medal for Music. After completing her studies, Julie Adam went to London to study with Maria Curcio, a renowned pianist and teacher. She also studied with Peter Feuchtwanger and Hans Keller. During her time in London, Julie Adam won several awards, including the Royal Overseas League Music Competition and the Royal College of Music's Chappell Gold Medal. Julie Adam's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the early 1980s. She made her debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1982, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. This was followed by performances with other major orchestras in Australia, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. In 1984, Julie Adam formed a piano duo with her friend and fellow pianist, Daniel Herscovitch. The duo quickly gained a reputation for their virtuosic performances and innovative programming. They performed extensively throughout Australia and internationally, including tours of Europe, Asia, and the United States. Julie Adam's solo career also flourished during this time. She performed recitals throughout Australia and internationally, including at the Wigmore Hall in London and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She also performed as a soloist with major orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Julie Adam's repertoire is extensive and includes works by a wide range of composers, from Bach to contemporary Australian composers. She has recorded several albums, including a highly acclaimed recording of the complete piano music of Percy Grainger. In addition to her performing career, Julie Adam is also a respected teacher and mentor. She has taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Australian National Academy of Music, and the University of Western Australia. She has also been a mentor to many young pianists, including her daughter, Kristian Chong, who is also a successful concert pianist. Julie Adam has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1993, she was awarded the Order of Australia for her services to music.
