He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Balabanov showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Balabanov's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the National School of Music in Sofia, where he studied under the guidance of some of Bulgaria's most prominent music teachers. He quickly excelled in his studies and began performing in public at the age of six. In 1996, Balabanov won first prize in the National Piano Competition for Young Musicians in Bulgaria, which marked the beginning of his successful career as a classical pianist. He continued to win numerous awards and accolades throughout his teenage years, including first prize in the International Piano Competition in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2001. In 2003, Balabanov was accepted into the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist Gary Graffman. During his time at Curtis, Balabanov continued to win awards and recognition for his performances, including first prize in the Philadelphia Orchestra's Greenfield Competition in 2005. After graduating from Curtis in 2007, Balabanov embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist, performing in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Balabanov's repertoire is vast and includes works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov, whose music he has championed throughout his career. In addition to his successful career as a concert pianist, Balabanov is also a dedicated teacher and has taught masterclasses at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Throughout his career, Balabanov has received numerous awards and accolades for his performances, including the Young Artist Award from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture in 2002 and the Order of Stara Planina, one of Bulgaria's highest honors, in 2015.
