Born on August 6, 1961, in the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Tanovitski grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a conductor and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged their son to pursue a career in music. Tanovitski began his formal music education at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned bass singer Evgeny Nesterenko. He quickly distinguished himself as a talented young singer, and in 1986 he won first prize at the All-Union Competition of Vocalists in Moscow. After completing his studies, Tanovitski joined the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he made his debut in the role of Mephistopheles in Gounod's "Faust." He quickly became a favorite of audiences and critics alike, and his performances in such roles as Boris Godunov, Don Basilio, and King Philip II earned him widespread acclaim. Tanovitski's international career took off in the 1990s, when he began performing at major opera houses around the world. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1997, in the role of Boris Godunov, and has since returned to the Met in such roles as Don Basilio, Ramfis, and the Grand Inquisitor. In addition to his work on the opera stage, Tanovitski is also a sought-after concert performer, and has appeared with such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also recorded several albums of Russian art songs and opera arias, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra. Throughout his career, Tanovitski has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1998, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Russia, and in 2006 he was named a People's Artist of Russia, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a performing artist in Russia.
