Longleash is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2013 by pianist Renate Rohlfing, cellist John Popham, and violinist Pala Garcia. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming and performances that push the boundaries of classical music. Rohlfing, Popham, and Garcia met while studying at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. They quickly discovered a shared passion for contemporary classical music and decided to form an ensemble that would focus on performing new works by living composers. The name "Longleash" was chosen to reflect the ensemble's commitment to exploring the full range of possibilities within contemporary classical music. The members of Longleash believe that the boundaries of classical music are constantly expanding, and they strive to be at the forefront of this evolution. Since its founding, Longleash has become known for its dynamic and engaging performances. The ensemble has performed at major venues across the United States, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have also been featured on numerous radio programs, including WQXR's "Q2 Music" and NPR's "Performance Today." One of the highlights of Longleash's career was their performance at the 2016 MATA Festival in New York City. The festival is dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging composers, and Longleash was chosen to perform a program of new works by young composers from around the world. The ensemble's performance was widely praised for its energy and creativity, and it helped to establish Longleash as one of the most exciting new ensembles in contemporary classical music. In addition to their performances, Longleash is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble has worked with students of all ages, from elementary school children to college students, to introduce them to the world of contemporary classical music. They have also collaborated with other artists and ensembles, including the JACK Quartet and the International Contemporary Ensemble, to create new works and explore new musical ideas. Longleash has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2015, they were awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that are dedicated to performing new and innovative works. They have also been awarded grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music. Despite their success, the members of Longleash remain committed to their original mission of exploring the full range of possibilities within contemporary classical music. They continue to seek out new composers and new works, and they are always looking for new ways to engage with audiences and push the boundaries of classical music.
