His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Bender showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Bender began his music education at the age of six, learning to play the piano. He showed exceptional talent and quickly progressed to more advanced pieces. At the age of ten, he started learning the violin and soon became proficient in playing both instruments. Bender's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Berlin Conservatory of Music, where he received formal training in music theory, composition, and performance. In 1943, Bender's family was forced to flee Berlin due to the war. They settled in Switzerland, where Bender continued his music education at the Zurich Conservatory. He studied under the tutelage of renowned violinist Max Rostal, who recognized Bender's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. After completing his studies, Bender began his professional career as a violinist. He performed with various orchestras in Switzerland and Germany, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1950, he was appointed as the concertmaster of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, a position he held for ten years. Bender's talent as a violinist was widely recognized, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1952, he won the Geneva International Music Competition, which helped to establish his reputation as a world-class musician. He also won the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1954. In addition to his work as a soloist and concertmaster, Bender was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Zurich String Trio, which performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States. The trio was highly regarded for their interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. Bender's career reached new heights in the 1960s when he was appointed as the concertmaster of the London Symphony Orchestra. He held this position for ten years and played under the baton of some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez. During his tenure with the orchestra, Bender also performed as a soloist, playing concertos by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Sibelius. In 1970, Bender returned to Switzerland and was appointed as the concertmaster of the Basel Symphony Orchestra. He held this position until his retirement in 1990. During his time with the orchestra, Bender continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with some of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Martha Argerich and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Bender's contribution to the world of music was recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to music. He was also awarded the Hans Georg Nägeli Medal by the city of Zurich in 1990. Fritz Richard Bender passed away on 22nd December 2003, at the age of 78. He left behind a legacy as one of the most talented and respected violinists of his generation.
