He was born on August 12, 1965, in Los Angeles, California, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Tom grew up in a musical environment and started playing the viola at the age of six. Tom's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He studied under some of the best viola teachers in the world, including William Primrose and Pinchas Zukerman. In 1983, Tom graduated from the Juilliard School in New York City with a Bachelor of Music degree.
