Founded in 1985 by Matthias Jung, the choir has established itself as one of the leading vocal ensembles in Europe, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The choir's early years were marked by a period of rapid growth and development. Under the leadership of Jung, the choir quickly gained a reputation for its high standards of performance and its commitment to exploring new and challenging repertoire. In 1987, the choir won first prize at the International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany, a major milestone in its early history. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the Sächsischer Kammerchor continued to build on its early successes, performing extensively throughout Germany and Europe and collaborating with some of the most respected conductors and orchestras in the classical music world. Highlights of this period include performances with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the Dresden Staatskapelle, as well as appearances at major music festivals such as the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. In addition to its work in the concert hall, the Sächsischer Kammerchor has also made a name for itself through its numerous recordings and broadcasts. The choir has released over 20 albums to date, covering a wide range of repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day. Its recordings have received critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the prestigious Echo Klassik award in 2003 for its recording of Bach's St. John Passion. One of the hallmarks of the Sächsischer Kammerchor's approach to music-making is its commitment to exploring new and lesser-known works. The choir has commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Wolfgang Rihm. It has also championed the music of neglected composers from the past, such as Heinrich Schütz and Johann Christoph Bach. Despite its many achievements, the Sächsischer Kammerchor has faced its share of challenges over the years. In 2008, Matthias Jung stepped down as artistic director after more than 20 years at the helm, leaving the choir to navigate a period of transition and change. However, under the leadership of its current artistic director, Hans-Christoph Rademann, the choir has continued to thrive and evolve, maintaining its commitment to excellence and innovation in the world of classical music. Today, the Sächsischer Kammerchor remains one of the most respected and admired vocal ensembles in Europe, known for its impeccable musicianship, adventurous programming, and unwavering dedication to the art of choral singing.
