The Erling Bloch Quartet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2003 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The quartet is named after its founder and cellist, Erling Bløndal Bengtsson, who was a renowned Danish cellist and teacher. The quartet consists of four members: Erling Bløndal Bengtsson on cello, Per Salo on violin, Asbjørn Nørgaard on viola, and Ulrich Stærk on piano. Erling Bløndal Bengtsson was born in 1932 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He began playing the cello at the age of six and went on to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. He later studied with the famous cellist Pablo Casals in France and Switzerland. Bengtsson was known for his virtuosic playing and his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was also a respected teacher and taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for many years. The other members of the quartet are also accomplished musicians. Per Salo is a violinist who has performed with many orchestras in Denmark and abroad. Asbjørn Nørgaard is a violist who has performed with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Danish Opera Orchestra. Ulrich Stærk is a pianist who has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Denmark and abroad. The Erling Bloch Quartet has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world. They have performed at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. They have also performed at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, the Festival Internacional de Música de Cadaqués in Spain, and the Festival de Musique de Menton in France. One of the highlights of the quartet's career was their performance of Beethoven's complete string quartets at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen in 2007. The quartet performed all 16 of Beethoven's string quartets over the course of six concerts. The performances were well-received by audiences and critics alike. The Erling Bloch Quartet has also received many awards and honors for their performances. In 2005, they were awarded the Danish Music Critics' Prize for their recording of Brahms' string quartets. They were also awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize in 2006 for their contributions to Danish music. Sadly, Erling Bløndal Bengtsson passed away in 2013 at the age of 81. However, the quartet continues to perform and uphold his legacy. They have recorded several albums, including recordings of the works of Brahms, Beethoven, and Schubert.
