Leslie Guinn was a renowned American bass-baritone opera singer who was born on August 23, 1945, in San Francisco, California. He was the son of a jazz pianist and a classical singer, which exposed him to music at a young age. Guinn's parents encouraged him to pursue music, and he began singing in church choirs and school musicals. Guinn attended San Francisco State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. He then went on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School in New York City. During his time at Juilliard, Guinn studied under the tutelage of renowned bass-baritone, Martial Singher. Guinn made his professional debut in 1972 with the San Francisco Opera, where he performed the role of the King in Verdi's "Aida." He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. Guinn went on to perform with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. One of Guinn's most notable performances was his portrayal of Porgy in Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess." He performed the role numerous times throughout his career, including a production at the Metropolitan Opera in 1985. Guinn's performance was praised for its emotional depth and powerful vocals. Guinn also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with many of the world's leading orchestras. He was particularly known for his performances of Handel's "Messiah" and Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." Guinn's rich, resonant voice was well-suited to the demands of these works, and he was praised for his ability to convey the emotional depth of the music. Throughout his career, Guinn received numerous awards and accolades for his performances. In 1983, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer. He was also a recipient of the National Opera Institute's Award for Excellence in Opera. Guinn was known not only for his vocal talent but also for his dedication to mentoring young singers. He served as a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. He also conducted masterclasses and workshops for aspiring singers around the world. Sadly, Leslie Guinn passed away on June 8, 2010, at the age of 64. He left behind a legacy as one of the most talented and respected bass-baritones of his generation.
