R. Winston Morris is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a tuba player, conductor, and educator. Born on February 11, 1941, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Morris grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Morris started playing the piano at the age of five and later switched to the tuba when he was in high school. Morris attended the University of Tennessee, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1963. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at Indiana University, where he studied under the tutelage of William Bell, the principal tuba player of the New York Philharmonic. Morris completed his master's degree in 1965 and then joined the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C., where he served as the principal tuba player for three years. In 1968, Morris joined the faculty of Tennessee Technological University, where he taught for 40 years until his retirement in 2008. During his tenure at Tennessee Tech, Morris established himself as a leading figure in the world of music education. He founded the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, which became one of the most renowned tuba ensembles in the world. Morris also served as the conductor of the Tennessee Tech Symphony Band and the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble. Morris's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1998, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Tuba Euphonium Association. In 2003, he was inducted into the American Bandmasters Association, and in 2004, he was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award by the Tennessee Music Educators Association.
