The orchestra was founded in 1962 by conductor and composer Mircea Cristescu, who served as its artistic director until 1990. Since then, the orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Cristian Mandeal, Gheorghe Costin, and Mihnea Ignat. The ensemble is made up of approximately 30 musicians, including string players, woodwind players, and brass players. The orchestra's repertoire includes works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary periods, and it has performed in a variety of venues throughout Romania and Europe. One of the highlights of the Iasi 'Moldova' Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1972 International Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin, where it received a standing ovation from the audience. The orchestra has also performed at the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in Europe. In addition to its performances, the Iasi 'Moldova' Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1975, the orchestra was awarded the title of "Laureate of the Romanian Academy" for its contributions to Romanian culture. In 1992, it was awarded the "Golden Lyre" prize by the Romanian Ministry of Culture, and in 2002, it received the "Cultural Merit" medal from the Romanian president. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of renowned soloists and conductors over the years, including violinist Alexandru Tomescu, pianist Radu Lupu, and conductor Lawrence Foster. Its recordings have been released on a variety of labels, including Electrecord, Olympia, and Naxos. In the 1990s, the orchestra struggled financially due to the economic difficulties facing Romania at the time.
