The quartet was founded in 1985 in Seoul, South Korea, by four young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a world-class ensemble. The founding members of the Kumho Asiana String Quartet were violinists Kim Chee-Yun and Chung Kyung-Wha, violist Kim Young-Uck, and cellist Kim Min-Jeong. All four musicians had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians in their own right, but they came together to form the quartet with the goal of exploring the rich repertoire of string quartet music and bringing their unique interpretations to audiences around the world. From the very beginning, the Kumho Asiana String Quartet was recognized for its exceptional musicianship and its ability to bring a fresh perspective to even the most well-known works in the string quartet repertoire. The quartet quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative ensembles in the world of classical music, and it has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible in chamber music ever since. Over the years, the Kumho Asiana String Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and music festivals in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. The quartet has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Itzhak Perlman. One of the highlights of the Kumho Asiana String Quartet's career was its performance of the complete Beethoven string quartets at the Seoul Arts Center in 1997. This ambitious project took the quartet over two years to complete, and it was hailed as a landmark achievement in the world of classical music. The quartet's recordings of the Beethoven quartets have also been widely praised for their depth, sensitivity, and technical brilliance. In addition to its performances and recordings, the Kumho Asiana String Quartet has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1993, the quartet won the Grand Prize at the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in the United States, and it has also been awarded the Korean National Academy of Arts Prize and the Korean Music Award. Despite its many achievements, the Kumho Asiana String Quartet remains committed to exploring new avenues in chamber music and bringing its unique voice to audiences around the world.
