She was the daughter of a music teacher and began playing the piano at a young age. Her talent was quickly recognized, and she was accepted into the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest at the age of 14. Ercse studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers of her time, including Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók, and Ernő Dohnányi. She quickly became known for her technical skill and musicality, and her performances were praised for their emotional depth and sensitivity. In 1952, Ercse won first prize at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Budapest, which launched her career as a concert pianist. She went on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Ercse was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt, and she recorded several albums of his music throughout her career. She was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by several Hungarian composers, including György Ligeti and György Kurtág. Throughout her career, Ercse received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1966, she was awarded the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest cultural honor. She was also named a People's Artist of Hungary in 1975 and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic in 1996. Despite her success, Ercse remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to perform and teach until her death on December 28, 2009, at the age of 80.
