He was the son of a French father and an Argentine mother. From a young age, Masson showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the cello and the viola, which became his primary instruments. Masson's family moved to Paris when he was a teenager, and he continued his music education there. He studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he was trained by some of the most prominent musicians of the time. He also attended masterclasses with renowned cellists such as Pablo Casals and Gregor Piatigorsky. After completing his studies, Masson began his career as a soloist and chamber musician. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. In 1955, Masson made his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York City, which was a major milestone in his career. He went on to perform at other prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Masson was also a prolific recording artist, and he made numerous recordings throughout his career. His recordings of the Bach Cello Suites and the Brahms Viola Sonatas are considered to be some of the finest interpretations of these works. In addition to his solo career, Masson was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Masson Quartet, which was one of the most respected string quartets of its time. The quartet performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States and recorded several albums. Masson was the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1960, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the Bach Cello Suites. He was also awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. Despite his success, Masson remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his unwavering commitment to musical excellence.
