Willy Stolarczyk was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1945, in Warsaw, Poland. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was no surprise that Willy showed an interest in music from a young age. Willy began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. By the time he was ten years old, he had already won several local piano competitions. In 1956, Willy's family moved to Paris, France, where he continued his musical education. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris under the tutelage of renowned pianist Yvonne Lefébure. During his time at the conservatory, Willy won several awards and prizes, including the first prize in the prestigious Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition in 1961. After completing his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris, Willy embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosic performances and sensitive interpretations of classical music. One of the highlights of Willy's career was his performance at the 1972 Salzburg Festival, where he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73, also known as the "Emperor" concerto. His performance was widely praised, and he was invited back to the festival several times over the years. Willy was also a prolific recording artist, and he made numerous recordings for major record labels such as Deutsche Grammophon and EMI. Some of his most acclaimed recordings include his interpretations of Chopin's piano works, which are considered some of the finest recordings of Chopin's music ever made. In addition to his performing and recording career, Willy was also a respected music educator. He taught at several prestigious music schools, including the Conservatoire de Paris and the Juilliard School in New York City. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as musicians themselves. Throughout his career, Willy received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest honors. He was also awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1992. Sadly, Willy passed away on January 15, 2001, at the age of 55. However, his legacy as one of the greatest classical pianists of the 20th century lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired and taught throughout his career.
