Role:PerformerPeriod:RomanticContemporaryModernGenre:ChoralFilmOperaOrchestralCynthia Millar is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as one of the world's leading performers on the rare and beautiful instrument, the Ondes Martenot. Born in California in 1957, Millar grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. She later studied music at the University of Southern California, where she discovered the Ondes Martenot and fell in love with its unique sound. The Ondes Martenot is an electronic musical instrument that was invented in the early 20th century by French musician Maurice Martenot. It consists of a keyboard and a series of metal rings that are worn on the performer's fingers and used to manipulate the sound. The instrument produces a haunting, ethereal sound that is often compared to the human voice. Millar became fascinated with the Ondes Martenot and began studying it in earnest. She traveled to France to study with some of the world's leading Ondes Martenot performers and composers, including Jeanne Loriod, who was a protégé of Martenot himself. Millar quickly became a master of the instrument, and her performances began to attract attention from audiences and critics alike. In the 1980s, Millar began performing with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. She made her debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1983, performing Olivier Messiaen's "Turangalîla-Symphonie" under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Millar's reputation as a leading Ondes Martenot performer was firmly established. Over the years, Millar has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She has worked with some of the most renowned conductors of our time, including Pierre Boulez, Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim. In addition to her work as a performer, Millar is also a respected teacher and lecturer. She has taught master classes and given lectures on the Ondes Martenot at universities and conservatories around the world. She has also written extensively about the instrument and its history, and has contributed to numerous books and articles on the subject. Millar's contributions to the world of classical music have not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French government in 2002. In 2010, she was awarded the prestigious Prix de la Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the arts and sciences. Despite her many accomplishments, Millar remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and teach, and is always looking for new ways to explore the possibilities of the Ondes Martenot. Her passion for the instrument and its unique sound has inspired countless musicians and audiences around the world, and her legacy as one of the greatest Ondes Martenot performers of all time is secure.More....
