He was born in New York City in 1954 and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz drummer, and his mother was a classical pianist. From a young age, Jarvis was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, which sparked his interest in music. Jarvis began his formal music education at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied percussion under the guidance of Fred Hinger. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. During his time at Juilliard, Jarvis was a member of the Juilliard Percussion Ensemble, which gave him the opportunity to perform in various concerts and festivals. After completing his studies, Jarvis began his professional career as a percussionist. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. One of the highlights of Jarvis's career was his performance at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. He was selected to perform the percussion solo in John Williams's Olympic Fanfare and Theme, which was played during the opening ceremony. The performance was watched by millions of people around the world and cemented Jarvis's reputation as one of the best percussionists of his generation. In addition to his work as a performer, Jarvis is also a respected educator. He has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Michigan, among others. He has also conducted masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring percussionists.
