Lise Sorrell is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1959, and grew up in a family that valued music. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer, so music was always a part of her life. Sorrell began playing the piano at the age of four and started studying the harpsichord at the age of 12. She attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with harpsichordist Catharina Meints and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in harpsichord performance. She then went on to study with Gustav Leonhardt at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where she earned a Master of Music degree in harpsichord performance. After completing her studies, Sorrell returned to the United States and began performing as a soloist and chamber musician. She quickly gained a reputation for her virtuosic playing and her ability to bring new life to Baroque music. She founded the ensemble Apollo's Fire in 1992, which quickly became one of the most respected Baroque ensembles in the world. Sorrell has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She has also performed at major music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. One of Sorrell's most significant achievements was her performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations in 2007. She performed the piece on a harpsichord that was built in the style of the instruments that Bach would have used, and the performance was hailed as a revelation. The New York Times called it "a performance of rare insight and beauty." Sorrell has also received numerous awards and honors for her work. In 2009, she was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize for Music, and in 2013, she was awarded the Handel Medallion by the City of New York for her contributions to the arts. She has also been awarded honorary doctorates from Case Western Reserve University and Baldwin Wallace University. In addition to her work as a performer, Sorrell is also a respected music educator. She has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. She has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing her knowledge and passion for Baroque music with a new generation of musicians. Sorrell's legacy as a musician and educator is a testament to her dedication to the art of music. She has brought new life to Baroque music, and her performances have inspired countless musicians and music lovers around the world.
