Herwig Tachezi was born on October 31, 1944, in Vienna, Austria. He was raised in a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known cellist. Tachezi began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent and passion for music. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts, where he received his diploma in piano and organ performance. Tachezi's career as a musician began in the 1960s, when he started performing as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and became known for his interpretations of Baroque and Classical music. In 1970, he won the prestigious Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany, which launched his international career. Throughout his career, Tachezi performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also collaborated with many renowned soloists, such as cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and violinist Gidon Kremer. Tachezi was particularly known for his performances of Bach's music, and he recorded several albums of Bach's keyboard works. His recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations and The Art of Fugue are considered some of the best interpretations of these works. He also recorded works by other composers, such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. In addition to his career as a performer, Tachezi was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts and was a visiting professor at several universities in Europe and the United States. He was known for his insightful and inspiring teaching style, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as musicians. Tachezi received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Sadly, Tachezi passed away on July 17, 2016, at the age of 71. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest interpreters of Bach's music and a beloved teacher and mentor to many aspiring musicians. His recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
