Period:RomanticModernGenre:ChamberDoris Lederer is a renowned violist and chamber musician who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in New York City in 1950, Lederer grew up in a family of musicians and began playing the viola at a young age. Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Lederer attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with William Lincer and Lillian Fuchs. She also studied with Karen Tuttle at the Aspen Music Festival and School. After completing her studies, Lederer joined the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as assistant principal violist in 1972. She remained with the orchestra for 14 years, during which time she also performed with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and the Baltimore Opera Company. In 1986, Lederer joined the faculty of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where she currently serves as professor of viola and chamber music. She has also taught at the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival. Throughout her career, Lederer has been an active chamber musician, performing with some of the world's most renowned ensembles. She was a founding member of the Audubon Quartet, which was in residence at the University of Virginia from 1976 to 2000. With the Audubon Quartet, Lederer performed throughout the United States and Europe, and recorded numerous albums for the Centaur and Naxos labels. Lederer has also been a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1992. With the society, she has performed at major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She has also recorded several albums with the society for the Delos label. In addition to her work as a performer, Lederer has been a champion of new music. She has premiered works by composers such as John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Augusta Read Thomas, and has recorded several albums of contemporary music for the Albany and Naxos labels. Lederer has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1993, she was awarded the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for Music. In 2000, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Juilliard School. In 2010, she was awarded the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. Lederer's contributions to the world of classical music have been significant, both as a performer and as a teacher. Her dedication to the viola and to chamber music has inspired countless musicians, and her performances have brought joy to audiences around the world.More....
