Nikolai Stoilov was a Bulgarian classical music artist who was born on January 1, 1933, in the city of Sofia. He was the son of a famous Bulgarian composer, conductor, and music teacher, Dobri Hristov, who was a significant influence on his musical career. Stoilov began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. In 1951, Stoilov enrolled at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, where he studied composition with Pancho Vladigerov and piano with Konstantin Ganev. He graduated in 1956 with a degree in composition and piano performance. After graduation, Stoilov continued his studies in Moscow at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he studied composition with Nikolai Rakov and piano with Yakov Flier. Stoilov's career as a pianist began in the 1950s, and he quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic performances. He won several awards at international piano competitions, including the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris in 1959 and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 1960. These victories launched his international career, and he began performing in major concert halls around the world. Stoilov's repertoire was vast, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He was also a champion of contemporary Bulgarian composers, and he premiered many works by his father, Dobri Hristov, as well as other Bulgarian composers. In addition to his career as a pianist, Stoilov was also a prolific composer. He wrote music for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions were influenced by Bulgarian folk music and were characterized by their lyricism and emotional depth. Stoilov's career was marked by many highlights, including his performances with major orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also performed at major music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. Stoilov was a recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1964, he was awarded the Dimitrov Prize, the highest honor for artists in Bulgaria. He was also awarded the Order of Cyril and Methodius, the highest honor for cultural achievements in Bulgaria. Stoilov continued to perform and compose until his death on December 23, 2001, in Sofia. He left behind a legacy as one of Bulgaria's most celebrated classical music artists, known for his virtuosic piano performances and his contributions to Bulgarian music as a composer.
