Solomiya Ivakhiv is a Ukrainian-American violinist who has established herself as one of the most dynamic and versatile musicians of her generation. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Ivakhiv began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Lviv Music School and later at the Lysenko Music College in Lviv, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree. In 1995, Ivakhiv moved to the United States to continue her studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with renowned violinist Ida Kavafian. She later earned her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Syoko Aki. Ivakhiv has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras around the world, including the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. One of Ivakhiv's most notable performances was her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2005, where she performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach. The performance was met with critical acclaim, with The Philadelphia Inquirer describing Ivakhiv's playing as "dazzling" and "virtuosic." In addition to her solo performances, Ivakhiv is also an active chamber musician. She is a founding member of the Lysander Piano Trio, which has won numerous awards and performed at major venues around the world. The trio's debut album, After a Dream, was released in 2014 to critical acclaim. Ivakhiv has also been recognized for her commitment to promoting contemporary music. She has premiered numerous works by living composers, including Richard Danielpour, Jennifer Higdon, and Augusta Read Thomas. In 2011, she released an album titled Ukraine-Journey to Freedom, which features works by Ukrainian composers. Throughout her career, Ivakhiv has received numerous awards and honors. In 2006, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. She has also been a recipient of the Career Grant from the Salon de Virtuosi and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. In addition to her performing career, Ivakhiv is also an active educator. She has taught at numerous institutions, including the University of Connecticut, the University of Georgia, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is currently a professor of violin at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Ivakhiv's playing has been praised for its "fiery intensity" and "emotional depth."
