Arabesque Duo is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by two talented musicians, flutist Zara Lawler and marimbist Paul Fadoul. The duo has gained a reputation for their unique and innovative performances that blend classical music with elements of jazz, world music, and improvisation. Zara Lawler, the flutist of the duo, is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles throughout the United States. She is also an accomplished dancer and choreographer, and often incorporates movement and dance into her performances. Paul Fadoul, the marimbist, is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and has performed with various orchestras and ensembles, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the New World Symphony. The duo's name, Arabesque, is a nod to the intricate and ornate designs found in Islamic art and architecture. This reflects the duo's interest in exploring the connections between different cultures and musical traditions. Arabesque Duo has performed at numerous prestigious venues and festivals throughout the United States, including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the Aspen Music Festival. They have also performed internationally, including in Canada, Mexico, and Europe. One of the highlights of Arabesque Duo's career was their performance at the National Flute Association Convention in 2008. Their performance, which included a mix of classical and contemporary pieces, was well-received by the audience and helped to establish the duo as a rising star in the classical music world. In addition to their live performances, Arabesque Duo has also released several critically acclaimed albums. Their debut album, "Dreams of a World," was released in 2009 and features a mix of classical and world music pieces. Their second album, "Airdancing," was released in 2013 and features original compositions by Lawler and Fadoul that blend classical music with elements of jazz and world music. Arabesque Duo has also received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 2010, they were awarded a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant, which allowed them to commission new works for their ensemble. They were also awarded a New Music USA Project Grant in 2015 to support the creation of a new multimedia work that combines music, dance, and video. Overall, Arabesque Duo has established themselves as a unique and innovative ensemble that pushes the boundaries of classical music.
