Born on December 12, 1979, in Bucharest, Romania, Catana grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at a young age. Catana's musical journey began at the George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Marin Cazacu. He continued his studies at the National University of Music in Bucharest, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in cello performance. During his studies, Catana participated in various competitions and won several awards, including the first prize at the National Cello Competition in Bucharest in 1997 and the first prize at the International Cello Competition in Liezen, Austria, in 2000. In 2002, he made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, where he performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.
