Born on March 21, 1949, in Roubaix, France, Lefebvre showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later discovered the organ and became fascinated with its unique sound and capabilities. Lefebvre's musical education began at the Conservatoire de Roubaix, where he studied piano and organ. He later continued his studies at the Conservatoire de Lille, where he won first prize in both piano and organ. In 1972, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study at the Villa Medici in Rome for two years. After returning to France, Lefebvre began his career as a concert organist, performing in major venues throughout Europe and the United States. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical skill and musical sensitivity, and was soon in demand as a soloist and accompanist. One of Lefebvre's most notable performances was his 1985 recital at Notre-Dame de Paris, which was broadcast live on French television. The concert featured works by Bach, Franck, and Widor, and showcased Lefebvre's virtuosic playing and interpretive abilities. The performance was widely praised by critics and helped to establish Lefebvre as one of the leading organists of his generation. In addition to his solo work, Lefebvre has also collaborated with numerous orchestras and conductors, including the Orchestre National de France, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has performed under the baton of such renowned conductors as Herbert von Karajan, Seiji Ozawa, and Daniel Barenboim. Lefebvre's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary periods. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Bach, Franck, and Messiaen, and has recorded several acclaimed albums of their works.
