Philip Gelling was born on May 12, 1985, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Gelling showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. Gelling's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his father and quickly progressed, winning his first competition at the age of six. Gelling continued to study with his father until the age of 12, when he was accepted into the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, England. At the Yehudi Menuhin School, Gelling received a world-class education in music, studying with some of the most renowned teachers in the field. He also had the opportunity to perform with some of the school's most talented students, including violinist Nicola Benedetti and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. After graduating from the Yehudi Menuhin School, Gelling went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London. There, he continued to hone his skills as a pianist, studying with some of the most respected teachers in the field. He also had the opportunity to perform in some of the college's most prestigious concerts, including the annual Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Gelling's talent as a pianist quickly became apparent, and he began to receive invitations to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls. In 2007, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, performing a program of works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. The performance was a resounding success, and Gelling received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Over the years, Gelling has continued to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna State Opera, and the Royal Opera House in London. He has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Valery Gergiev. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Gelling is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's most renowned ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, and the Guarneri Quartet. Gelling's talent as a pianist has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for the future. He has also been awarded the Gilmore Young Artist Award, the Arthur Rubinstein Prize, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Despite his success as a pianist, Gelling remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to practice for hours each day, always striving to improve his technique and interpretation of the music. He is also passionate about sharing his love of music with others, and he frequently gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians. In addition to his work as a performer, Gelling is also an advocate for music education. He believes that music has the power to transform lives and that every child should have the opportunity to learn an instrument. He has worked with numerous organizations to promote music education, including the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the Royal Philharmonic Society.
