He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a choirmaster and his mother was a pianist. Jenkins began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Jenkins attended the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, where he studied piano and composition. He later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he received a scholarship to study composition. During his time at the Royal Academy of Music, Jenkins studied under the renowned composer Lennox Berkeley. After completing his studies, Jenkins began his career as a composer and pianist. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was awarded several prestigious awards, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Prize for Composition in 1967 and the Welsh Arts Council Prize for Composition in 1970. Jenkins' music was heavily influenced by his Welsh heritage and often incorporated traditional Welsh folk melodies. He was also influenced by the works of composers such as Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Jenkins' career as a pianist was equally successful. He performed extensively throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, and was known for his virtuosic performances of works by composers such as Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. One of the highlights of Jenkins' career was his performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1972. He performed his own composition, "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was met with critical acclaim and cemented Jenkins' reputation as a composer and pianist. In addition to his career as a composer and pianist, Jenkins was also a respected music educator. He taught at several institutions, including the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the University of Wales. Jenkins continued to compose and perform throughout his career, and his music was performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. He was awarded several honorary degrees and was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1999. Sadly, Jenkins passed away on December 16, 2014, at the age of 74.
