Garrett List is a renowned American composer, trombonist, and pianist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on August 3, 1943, in Tacoma, Washington, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to music at an early age. List began playing the piano at the age of six and later picked up the trombone in high school. He attended the University of Washington, where he studied music composition and performance. After completing his studies, he moved to New York City in 1965 to pursue a career in music. In New York, List quickly became involved in the avant-garde music scene, collaborating with artists such as John Cage, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. He also formed his own ensemble, the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, which included musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Carla Bley, and Don Cherry. In 1971, List released his debut album, Your Own Self, which featured his compositions for trombone and piano. The album received critical acclaim and established List as a rising star in the classical music world. Throughout the 1970s, List continued to perform and record with his ensemble, as well as collaborate with other artists. He also began to incorporate electronic music into his compositions, experimenting with synthesizers and tape loops. In 1980, List moved to Europe, where he continued to compose and perform. He became a professor of music at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany, and later at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in the Netherlands. During his time in Europe, List continued to push the boundaries of classical music, incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and world music into his compositions. He also began to focus more on his work as a composer, writing pieces for orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo performers. In 1990, List released his album The New York Takes, which featured recordings from his early years in New York City. The album was a retrospective of his work and showcased his evolution as a composer and performer. Throughout his career, List has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to classical music. In 1996, he was awarded the Prix Italia for his composition "The Maiden and the Nightingale." He has also been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. Today, List continues to compose and perform, dividing his time between Europe and the United States. He remains a respected figure in the classical music world, known for his innovative compositions and unique approach to performance.
