Jonah Kim is a renowned cellist who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born in 1983 in Seoul, South Korea, Kim began playing the cello at the age of six. His parents, both musicians, recognized his talent early on and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Kim's family moved to the United States when he was nine years old, and he continued his musical education under the guidance of renowned cellist Lynn Harrell. Kim attended the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he studied with Ronald Leonard, and later went on to earn his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Joel Krosnick. Throughout his career, Kim has been recognized for his exceptional talent and musicianship. In 2001, he won the Grand Prize at the National Sphinx Competition, a prestigious competition for young black and Latino classical musicians. He went on to win numerous other awards, including the Juilliard School's Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to exceptional young musicians who show great potential for a solo career. Kim has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. One of Kim's most memorable performances was his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2004, where he performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach. The performance was met with critical acclaim, with the Philadelphia Inquirer calling Kim's playing "soulful and technically brilliant." In addition to his work as a soloist, Kim is also an avid chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's most renowned chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri String Quartet. He is also a founding member of the Phoenix Chamber Ensemble, a group dedicated to performing chamber music in non-traditional venues. Kim is known for his passionate and expressive playing, as well as his commitment to bringing classical music to new audiences. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. He has also performed in a number of non-traditional venues, including schools, hospitals, and prisons, in an effort to make classical music more accessible to a wider audience. In addition to his work as a performer, Kim is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Southern California, and has given masterclasses at some of the world's most renowned music schools, including the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. Kim's recordings have been widely praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. His debut album, released in 2007, featured works by Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, and was met with critical acclaim. His most recent album, released in 2019, features works by Schumann and Shostakovich. Throughout his career, Kim has remained committed to his craft and to bringing classical music to new audiences.
