Katja Cerovsek is a Slovenian-Canadian violinist who has established herself as one of the most versatile and accomplished classical musicians of her generation. Born on October 13, 1976, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Cerovsek began playing the violin at the age of three and gave her first public performance at the age of six. She grew up in a musical family, with her mother being a pianist and her father a conductor. Cerovsek's talent was recognized early on, and she was accepted into the Ljubljana Academy of Music at the age of ten. She continued her studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Her teachers included Dorothy DeLay, Felix Galimir, and Itzhak Perlman. Cerovsek's career as a soloist began in earnest in the mid-1990s, when she won several prestigious competitions, including the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. These victories led to engagements with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. One of Cerovsek's most notable performances was her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1998, where she played the Brahms Violin Concerto under the baton of Claudio Abbado. The performance was widely praised, with critics noting Cerovsek's technical brilliance and emotional depth. Cerovsek has also made a name for herself as a chamber musician, collaborating with some of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Angela Hewitt and cellist Steven Isserlis. She has performed at major festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. In addition to her performances, Cerovsek is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, and has given masterclasses around the world. She is also the founder and artistic director of the Silicon Valley Music Festival, which brings together musicians from around the world for a week of concerts and workshops. Cerovsek's recordings have received critical acclaim, with her album of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin being particularly well-received. She has also recorded works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert, among others. Throughout her career, Cerovsek has received numerous awards and honors. In addition to her competition wins, she has been awarded the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award, the Virginia Parker Prize, and the Canada Council for the Arts' Career Development Grant. She was also named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2019. Despite her many accomplishments, Cerovsek remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and teach, and is committed to bringing classical music to new audiences around the world.
